Tarmac Specialists Come the the Fore

The first leg of Rallye Deutschland was held near host town Trier on a mixture of narrow country roads and winding vineyard sections. Quentin Gilbert of France took the first stage points of the event, leading Spaniard Yeray Lemes by 4.3sec. He in turn was followed by British driver Tom Cave 1.5sec behind. The Estonian championship leader Sander Pärn sat mid table after the first stage over 7sec behind the leader.
There were reports of muddy conditions on the Waxweiler stage, causing Tom Cave to miss his breaking point and slide wide at a junction.  Yeray Lemes took his first stage win of the event on SS2 with Gilbert and Belgium’s Ghislain de Mevius following in 11.6sec.

The third stage of the morning was held in Moselland and was the longest of the day, testing our drivers over 21km of classic German vineyard roads. Lemes collected his second stage victory of the morning to extend his lead to 7sec going into the midday service back in Trier.

Going into the regroup, the entire field is separated by just under 2min with Lemes leading from Gilbert and Cave.

Yeray Lemes said: “It feels good to get back on Tarmac. We were not as fast on the first stage but made up for it on the next two. We were flat out on the second. There were no problems or mistakes and we are taking it stage by stage.”

Quentin Gilbert said: “I didn’t push too hard on the first stage. The third was long, narrow and fast but I drove confidently. Our pace notes are good and I’m not worried about the apparently worsening conditions on Waxweiler. We will continue in the same style this afternoon, with confidence.”

Tom Cave said: “It was a good drive this morning, not perfect, but I’m happy. I made a mistake on the second stage early on which was entirely my fault. I don’t really care about the times, I am just enjoying the opportunity to drive these stages. There are some big cuts in the road so I plan to maintain the pace and stay on the road.”
