Championship Leader Solans Holds Early Advantage

Winner of the opening round and FIA Junior World Rally Championship leader Nil Solans holds an early advantage at Rally Italia Sardegna after setting four fastest times to build a 36.7-second overnight lead.

Spaniard Solans and co-driver Miki Ibanez led by 0.6 seconds after Thursday night’s opening Ittiri Arena stage and overcame a damaged rear axle during this morning’s tests close to Olbia. He held a slender 1.4 second advantage at mid-day service back in Alghero but a solid run through this afternoon’s stages saw him extend that lead.

Second is French pairing Terry Folb and Christopher Guieu who had a mistake-free drive to post two fastest times. Podium finishers in the opening round in Corsica, the pair came here to challenge for victory and aim to keep the pressure on Solans tomorrow.

Nicolas Ciamin and Tibo de la Haye are third, just 8.6 seconds adrift of Folb, and another crew to top the time-sheets today. Irishman Rob Duggan scored two fastest times as he climbed to third place but a collision with a rock on stage seven damaged the rear axle on his Ford Fiesta R2 and he was unable to continue.

Miko Niinemae from Estonia was also side-lined after hitting a tree and Dillon van Way was force to stop with a damaged oil sump.

Nil Solans: “We haven’t been pushing very hard because it will be a long rally and we need to be careful with the car as the stages are pretty rough. Everything is fine, we’ve had a good day and just concentrated really on trying to have a clean run.”

Terry Folb: “We’ve had quite a good day and the first pass through the stages wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s still a long way to go but we will just concentrate on keeping the pace up and protecting the car as I think tomorrow’s stages will be tougher.”
